Sewing machine, single needle/bobbin configuration

A variation in design, utilizing a single needle/bobbin(upper)  — whereas the previous configuration is better suited for embroidery.

One of the design goals is to bring the thread feeding internal to the machine, an adaptation of say the hand towel dispensers in some restrooms where the paper comes out of the center of the roll, instead of along the outside. This requires a different bobbin design, which is more challenging, but nearly complete. The benefits include fewer objects, things which can get caught on fabric, fingers, etc. If you have ever a thread become unknowingly caught, and the bobbin end up in knotted disarrary, you know how frustrating this can be. This arrangement also allows for a simpler loading/unloading process of the needle assembly.

I’ve been continuing to revise & tweak the design, adding in some things from feedback I’ve received from some folks I know who sew.  As you will see in the close up below, I have added feed-throughs for the thread from bobbin to needle.

These are some shots of a sewing machine design I’ve been fiddling with in SolidWorks. It’s almost there…a few developmental images.

This was the first assy, with two of the main components — vertical pillar/controls & arm assy — the drive assy came last.

Coming up with a visual style which would be considered ‘advanced’, without being boxy, or sacrificing aesthetic efficiency was the first challenge. Integrating the control features expected today, along with visual interface and widely proliferating CAD apps for sewing was another key one.

Having had seamstresses in my family, I was well aware that, despite cautions to the contrary, for quick short lifts, the horizontal arm is often used as an ad hoc handle. This means some accomodation for this in terms of stress and fit was called for. Check back for an expansion on these comments as the project progresses…

Evolution of computing power

A few weeks ago, students & staff at Purdue built their own super computer in just a few hours.  When they finished, it was, at that moment, it was #40 out of the top 500 fastest computers on the planet.  Multi-core processor architecture is also already here and functional.  This is not just projections, as in Intel’s Terascale project, but Tilera’s approach to “tiled processors” suggests a wave of exponential rather than incremental growth, and swiftly.  As Meshverse notes in the above link, Tilera started “started shipping a 64-core processor with an on-chip network called iMesh” last year(2007).

One of the fascinating aspects of this ’tiled’ approach is the premise of  “is very much like the Internet on a chip,” as noted by Tilera’s founder & CTO Anant Agarwal.

“The hope of the industry is to double the number of cores every 18 months. My prediction is, by 2014, we will have 1,000-core architectures. But the problem is, [current] architectures don’t scale.”

Design tools & venues converge

All of you CAD minions are no doubt relishing the accelerating convergence of venues & platforms where we can exercise our craft.  Soon the artificial partitions between engineering, product design, CGI, game creators, machinima and artists in general will disappear completely.  The GUI of different CAD systems are beginning to coalesce into singularity — to commodicize, as my Meshverse buddy likes to say — in much the same way word processing did several years ago.  With the expansion of generic CAD apps with full palette capabilities, many things become rapidly more accessible.  Now we need to bridge the differences in tool sets & process between the Maya/3DS tool sets & process and that of the CAD world.  After that, achieving unison among the virtual worlds will be much more straighforward.  As a CAD polyglot, my eagerness is tough to mask.
